my personal statement

After my grandfather passed away, I built a memorial from Lego and found peace redesigning it every day. It was then that the need to create and to edit became obvious to me. Since, my instinct for visual expression runs through my YouTube channel: The Movie Fan. In fact, the need to create new content for this channel ignited my interest in film and post-production. Over the past two years, I have edited more than 500 videos that together have reached an audience of 2.4 million views. This unexpected success further fueled my fascination for how films are crafted behind the scenes.
I am passionate about learning and my aim is to have a career in post-production. Therefore, I would like to have the opportunity at university to develop professional level software skills to transform raw footage. Editing and creating visual effects captivate me, especially as they combine technical expertise with artistic vision. I believe my creative nature, personal determination and detailed approach to work are all well matched to my goals.
I have really enjoyed studying my A level in Photography. It has helped me to master a range of technical skills and given me a good understanding of the formal elements of art. Importantly, it has taught me to trust my creative ideas. In Sixth Form, studying the works of André Kertész and Henri Cartier-Bresson has deepened my interest in composition, patterns, and lines. Furthermore, with James Welling’s photograms, I have developed an appreciation for abstract shapes, textures, and colours. Photography has taught me how to see things differently and find artistic meaning in unexpected details. Yong Yongliang's dystopian landscapes have inspired me to create my own images, turning everyday objects into microscopic worlds. With regards to other genres, in a recent project, I layered images of flowers upon photographic portraits to evoke dreamlike and surrealist qualities. These projects sharpened my Photoshop skills, and beyond photography I have cultivated editing abilities through my YouTube channel, where I began with basic tools like CapCut and Alight Motion.
Growing up with mild ASD & ADD presented learning challenges, but these experiences shaped my ability to persevere and adapt. I developed an ability to hyper-focus as well as maintain discipline and hard work. I thrive in visually rich, detail-oriented tasks where I can fully immerse myself. My neurodivergence has become a driving force in my creative work and helps me think differently, which is a highly desired attribute in the arts. In the future, I am looking forward to working as part of a creative film team, I am different from others, but I am a team player, and I compete for the school running club, captain for international day and work on collaborative projects. Furthermore, my commitment to continuous improvement, both academically and personally, has been acknowledged at school with various awards given at the end of year speech days.
My admiration for post-production work has fundamentally changed how I watch films. Blockbusters like Jurassic Park, The Dark Knight, and Dune continue to inspire me, but now I view them through a technical lens. The groundbreaking VFX in Jurassic Park, despite being 30 years old, remains timeless, while the sound design and visual effects in Dune demonstrate how technology can bring fictional worlds to life. Apart from the cinema, I visit exhibitions, and I am excited to be going to the James Cameron exhibition in Paris shortly.
My passion for storytelling and technical exploration fuels my confidence in pursuing a degree in film production. I am particularly excited about programs that emphasize practical learning and collaboration, especially those with modules on editing, visual effects, and colour grading. I look forward to immersing myself in this field and contributing my creativity, reliability, and passion to my university.
